This was me yesterday, in my office, sending selfies to Sunny with a coaster on my head. She also received one with a paper plate that was almost just as good. (Except this one has now been filtered to make it less scary. ) Wasn’t it her lucky day?! We were brainstorming the supplies for the “Off To The Races” Derby-Style GNO, fascinator creating activities.
I was trying this on for size.
It all started with the idea of making giant derby hats for GNO. We quickly realized that would put us in the poor house. So we’ve been scouring the web for months to find exactly the right DIY “Fascinator” supplies. It turns out that flowers, feathers, and crinoline aren’t the only costly parts of a fascinator. The less glamorous components, like the tiny sinamay hat base, and a headband that won’t snap right in half, are equally important, and pricey.
Especially when you’re planning to make 100 of them!
We were searching for any possible solution. What fabric could we use to make our own hat base? Even the stiffest felt was too flimsy. Foam was too fat. It felt like we were going to have to give up and go with either something completely crazy or wildly expensive. But if you know me at all, you know I’m not a quitter, and I usually don’t take “no” for an answer. Just as I heard myself say, “We’re going to figure this out. There has to be another way.” , a thought popped in my mind . . . cardboard!
That thought was quickly followed with the thought of having to cut 100 circles.
But before I could even form my next thought, Sunny was calling out ideas. Cake rounds, paper plates. . . coasters! I pulled one out and tried it on for size. Voila! That was our answer. We found nice, round, white coasters in bulk that will make the perfect hat base for our fascinators in two weeks. Now you know. (Just in case you ever want to try this at home.) But I have a surprise for you.
It’s not about the fascinators.
In life, it’s never about what meets the eye. It’s about what’s underneath. The real problem is almost always the deeper thing, you can’t see on the surface. Just when you think you’ve conquered the hard part, life has a way of presenting the next level to the challenge.
So go ahead, look deeper.
Just when it feels like you’re going to have to cave in and give up, keep going. Keep talking it out. Keep sharing the journey with the ones you love.
When all your ideas are gone, generate just one more.
It might be exactly what you’ve been waiting for. It might be just the impetus you need to get to the next point. There’s always a way.
If you don’t give up, you will find it.
You’re on the verge of a breakthrough.
We need you to keep going.
to more love,
Crystal
