One of my very favorite past times is exploring with my boys. Give us woods, give us mountains, give us rivers, or even just a big back yard. We are going to go out there and find something interesting. And we’re going to have a good time doing it. We’ll probably get wet, dirty or completely stuck in mud.
We’re making memories, and figuring life out.
We rarely ever know exactly where we’re going. We’ve been lost and stuck, more times than I can count. We never stay lost or stuck though. We have no intention of staying out in the wild forever. Sometimes we get to a dead-end or uncrossable river and have to change directions, or completely turn around. We don’t count that as a failure. There’s no “win or lose” in the journey of exploration.
Life is just like that.
This quote is such a great reminder to me. I hope it is for you too:
“No matter how long you have traveled in the wrong direction, you always have the choice to turn around.”
As much as I am constantly encouraging you to “keep going”, “don’t quit”, “just do the next right thing” . . . this is also true. Sometimes the next right thing is turning around. Maybe it feels like you’re quitting, but it’s actually just a change in direction. Maybe it’s “keep going”, but a just another way.
Wherever you find yourself today, I hope you’ll give yourself the freedom to make a different choice.
The journey may not be leading where you once thought.
It’s okay to turn around.
