Isn’t it fitting that this morning I woke up with sun in my eye? That’s a rare occasion and is typically followed by a feeling of panic that I overslept my alarm.
This morning was a little bit different though.
When I opened my eyes, it took me a minute to process what day it was. Then I looked at the clock and realized the time. I’d certainly overslept! To the tune of two hours in fact. Panic started to set in. I quickly checked my phone to see what in the world happened, and somehow the ringer was turned all the way down. It had been snoozing on and off for two straight hours.
My first response was frustration.
Those first two hours of the day are so important. I’ve committed to blog and then be with the boys before starting my workday. I was frustrated that I’d missed them already. Then I realized the irony that today is Labor Day. Ha. The day of rest. No coincidence.
So instead of flying out of bed to start running to catch up, I just laid there for a few minutes.
Then instead of rushing through breakfast and making a beeline for the office, we finished watching the Star Wars movie we were watching last night, we threw the football in the back, and took a quick bike ride. Now the boys are settled, playing Legos, and I have this peaceful moment to write.
Our bodies need rest and sometimes they take it whether we give them permission or not.
I know not everyone get a chance to sleep in today or take the day off from work, but maybe you could just take a break you normally don’t. Give yourself a little time to rest in some way.
I don’t know what’s practical for you, but maybe you could put your phone in a drawer somewhere and completely ignore it for an hour. Maybe you could leave the dishes in the sink a little longer than usual. Maybe you could turn the music up loud and dance while you’re making lunch.
Whatever it may look like to you, try let your mind and your body rest, for at least a little while today.
You’ll be glad you did.
to more love,
