Is your heart behind?

paddington1

We saw Paddington Bear yesterday.  It was cute.  Amid the chaos of an accident prone bear, a psychotic taxidermist, a controlling father, an overly sweet mother, a rebellious teenage girl, an experimental boy and a drunk grandma, it’s a nice story about figuring out where you’re meant to be.

My favorite moment by far, is with this intriguing old man Mr. Gruder, the antique shop owner.  He was sharing an empathetic moment with Paddington about how leaving a life you love in search of a better one can feel lonely at first. His words struck me:

My body traveled very fast, but my heart took a little longer to arrive.

I bet you know that feeling.

When your body is in a new city, but your heart isn’t there yet.

When your body is in a job, but your heart isn’t.

Your body is somewhere you feel like it should be, but your heart is behind.

I’ve been there.

I’ve been there when I’ve walked out the door to work leaving my babies with someone else to care for them.

My heart was behind.

I’ve been there standing in an operating room in Dallas and creating HeartStories at home in the evenings.

My heart was behind.

When our heart is behind, it’s good to take notice.

Sometimes it’s just what change feels like and our hearts need a little extra time.

But sometimes, when our heart is behind, we need to listen up and pay attention.

It’s trying to tell us that it’s not going to move.  It’s waving a big flag and setting off flares for us to realize, we are needed somewhere else.  We are meant to be somewhere else, doing something else.

I knew this feeling the first time I faced the reality of human trafficking.  Even if I tried to look away and excuse myself because I was too”busy”, my heart was still behind.   As time passed, I realized it wasn’t going to be joining me where my brain and my body were hanging out.

And that was a good thing.

It’s what eventually led me to create HeartStories. The day I decided to align my body with my heart, is a day I will never regret. It’s been hard.  Really hard, but it’s been worth it. I’m not the same girl I used to be and boy, am I grateful!

What about you?

Where is your heart these days?

Is it behind?

If it is, pay attention.  Ask it questions.  Learn more about where your heart is and where it wants to take you.  You never know.

It might just be your turn.

It might be your turn to start living the story of your heart instead of only listening to the one in your head.

If you’re thinking maybe it is,  we’d love to hear all about it below.

This is the foundation of our tribe at HeartStories.  You’re not alone.

  1. Again, this is timely. I needed this today. Going to be praying through this question. Want you to hold me accountable for that.

    1. I’m so glad Toni! You know I will.
