Undercover Sisters

crystal-serving at Grace Inspired Beauty ~ Crystal Gornto ~ Heartstories

If you’ve ever hosted an event, you know it takes more than a village to pull it off successfully.  And if you haven’t, just trust me, it does.   Every detail requires some thought and execution ~ from napkins, table cloths, A/V equipment, ice, extension cords, etc…  Last night I learned (the hard way) that you should never serve deviled eggs on a slippery silver platter.  Trust me again here, it’s just not good.

But I learned so much more.

It was my sister Kim’s 1st Annual Open house for her business, Grace Inspired Beauty and I got the privilege of serving the food with my sister Heather and my fill-in sister Janet.  I wish I had a picture of the three of us, we were quite the motley crew.  Even more, I wish I had been wearing a live feed video.  It would have been one laugh after the next, of us trying to figure out how to serve all 9 (!) courses of food in the order they were meant to be served, while guests were pouring in the door all night long – with only three trays.

Hysterical.

It’s been a long time since I was a server.  I waited tables all through college and was a flight attendant (& a beverage cart girl on the golf course) right out of school.  So service was all I’d known until I got my first sales job in 2004.  I’ve forgotten a lot since then.  I’ve grown a lot since then.

I’m paying more attention.

What I noticed?  Last night, when I was “the help” folks were friendly and polite.  But when Kim would introduce me as her sister, I watched their faces completely change.  It was crazy.  Suddenly they were thrilled to meet me and very interested in my life.  It felt like an episode of Undercover Boss which added to the calamity of my already “dusty” serving skills.  But most of all, it was a very vivid reminder.

At the end of the day, we are all the same.

We dress differently.  We have different jobs and responsibilities.  We have different strengths and talents.  We have different hair color and body shapes.  We have different amounts of money in our checking accounts.

But looking from the inside out, we are all the same.

We have the same hopes and dreams.  The same hurts and fears.  The same feelings.

We share this thing called humanity ~ all of us.

So when you encounter a stranger in your life today, think about this story.   Consider smiling and looking in her eyes.  Connect with her humanity.  You don’t have to say a word.  Trust me, she will know.

Because at the end of the day, she is your sister.

We’re all just sisters, undercover.

to more love,

Crystal
