Have you ever been driving along, listening to the radio and realized you’re completely captivated by the lyrics of the song that’s playing? That’s happened to me several times with this song by Francesca Battistelli this past week. I don’t know if the station I listen to is playing it more often, but it feels like every time I hop in the car, it’s playing.
I’m taking that as a sign it’s time to talk about it.
Truth is harder than a lie
The dark seems safer than the light
And everyone has a heart that loves to hide
I’m a mess and so are you
We’ve built walls nobody can get through
Yeah, it may be hard, but the best thing we could ever do, ever do
Bring your brokenness, and I’ll bring mine
‘Cause love can heal what hurt divides
And mercy’s waiting on the other side
If we’re honest
~ Francesca Battistelli
I don’t know what Francesca was going through when she wrote this, but this song just makes me want to shout Amen Sister! Even if you don’t have some big secret looming that needs to be shared, this song speaks to the heart of connection.
It speaks to our daily interactions.
It’s so much easier to say, I’m good. Everything’s fine. Than it is to say, I’m having a tough day. I’m scared. We tell ourselves no one has time, that no one really wants to know what’s going on behind our pretty painted walls.
But we’re wrong.
If we’re honest, it swings open the door of permission, for the people in our lives to be honest too. And whatever hurt, fear, sadness or anger you’re hiding behind that pretty smile truly can only be healed in relationship.
You can tell yourself . . . and everyone else, you’re fine. Or you can call or text a trusted friend, and be honest.
Because that’s what we do when we’re ready to grow.
Let’s be honest.
to more love,
