Bittersweet Summertime

Around here, many moms are celebrating . . . and lamenting (just a tad bit) the last day of school.  Simultaneously relieved and a little bit terrified. We’re finished with homework, packing lunches, carpool lines, teacher gifts and end of year parties.  On one hand, it’s a huge relief.  But we’re looking down the barrel of 12 weeks of managing unusual schedules, creating fun activities, packing for road trips,  applying sunscreen, picking up wet swimsuits and trying to continue to contribute to the world in a meaningful way in the middle of it all.  Then there’s the never-ending pull of over-scheduling versus under-scheduling.

I’ve certainly done my share of both.

It’s like a science experiment gone rogue.  You don’t have a clue how the ingredients will mix until you dump them in the beaker.  It could create the coolest pink slime, or the whole thing could blow up in your face.  There’s only one way to find out. . . try it.  You’ll probably get a little bit of both.  The pink slim will be fun and the explosion will teach you something.

Summertime is bittersweet.

There’s so much good, so much fun to be had and there’s all the rest.  That’s true of everything in life.  There’s the way we envision things turning out and then there’s reality.  Like this picture, from that very same trip above, of the injuries from a toe to chin fall.

Life is often bittersweet.

So whatever your summer plans hold, I want to send you out with this quote:
“When life is sweet, say thank you and celebrate. And when life is bitter, say thank you and grow.”  ~ Shauna Niequist
May you celebrate and grow all through the bittersweet summertime!
to more love,
Crystal
P.S.  It’s not too late to start your celebrating, with me tonight!  There’s a party going on you know.  Check it out right here.
